“Creativity Takes Courage”

-Henri Matisse

It all started when I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. I recently found an assignment from elementary school that asked this very question and my answer was artist. From my earliest memories, I was always asking questions about how to make things and I was always making. I remember the first time my father put a drill in my hands and there was no turning back after that.

The arts and sciences have always pushed and pulled for my attention. After finishing my college education in biology, I soon realized that my creative spirit was never satisfied. I knew I could connect more people to the sciences through the exploration of the arts. I began working for an incredible and very skilled metal artist and my deep dive into metals arts began. Seeking out fabrication skills, I slowly began to pick up a wide variety of other skills and exposure to the arts. I had the opportunity to work with wax and learn about sand and ceramic shell casting, welding of a wide variety of metals and forming and shaping sheet metal. I’ve created jewelry, built home goods, sculpture and public art commissions throughout the years. My style is sleek and modern with a touch of the natural world streaming in and out of every concept like a river. It is meant to challenge the observer and bring an inquisitive and playful conversation to the table. My pieces are meant to be interactive by either being worn, observed or provide some kind of function. Teaching runs in my blood as the product of two teacher parents and connecting people to the sciences through the arts is one of my goals as a maker. I aim to widen the perspective of the observer. To see deeper into a concept that encourages one to ask questions. The arts cannot exist without the sciences and visa versa. I aim to help break the idea that humans are more inclined to one and not the other.
